I think it would be best for Pete and his fans for him to accept a caution. Let's face, Pete is not going to get out of this unscathed. By avoiding a trial he will be able to get back to what he needs to do. If he went to trial and even was found innocent, that would still be a very, very long process.

Dear Webmaster.......I read article, and I don't see how it is unfair? Maybe I'm missing something? It included Jerry Halls statement and it included Pete's postings on his website, and doesn't speculate on his credibility. The article also states that further investigation on Pete's computers probably proved that there was nothing else on them to make a "hard" case against him. Please remember HE DID DOWNLOAD and PAY to get on a website.........I believe he did this as a vigilante.......and this article doesn't seem to doubt that was his motive. Why do you think it "unfair"?

First, thank you for putting this site up. I believe Pete is innocent as well. All the media did here in Canada and all of North America was sensationalize the worst aspects and since have done little or nothing to report facts that have come forward since then. It's nice to find something that offers a balanced view.

One thing to note though: I have no documentation supporting this but remember reading comments about his suspected abuse from Pete as early as 1994 when the production of "The Who's Tommy" had it's run in Toronto. He stated then that he thought he'd been sexually abused as a child and added that it was those images that come to him when writing that fueled the writing of Tommy in the first place. As I said, I've no documentation supporting this but recall it clearly from when I saw the production and read the literature surrounding it. If I'm able to find anything tangible I'll be sure to pass the information on.

Again, my thanks for putting up this site in support of an innocent man.

Just this week, I have been browsing through a book on Child Abuse, compliments of a Solicitor, complete with graphic pictures of injuries inflicted, does this make me a Child Abuser or a potential Child Abuser?

During a panel meeting of RSPCA workers, a folder of cruelty cases complete with photographs was placed on the table. I watched with interest as people were warned the photographs were explicit and not recommended for animals lovers to view. Interestingly, only two of the team of ten looked through that folder. One was me, an animal lover and owner. Does that make me more likely to commit an act of cruelty against an animal than anyone else?

The law of Incitement is vague and laws of acts of a sexual nature are vague and incredibly hypocritical. The Worldwide Web has the ability to educate and inform where other media formats are biased and controlled, but the British Justice system is lagging behind this new technology. The law that is being used against Pete suggests viewing such material is almost equal to committing the act shown, yet little is being done to curb the originators of these sites.

If any good can come out of this fiasco, it will be that the current law will be debated and that sites may be traced and closed down.

I hope this doesn't stop Pete from investigating matters that he obviously cares deeply about, enough to act in the innocence that information must be sought in order to be informed and educate others.

Researchers are the people's champions and without them, decent ordinary people are wholly ignorant of such unspeakable acts as child rape and abuse. To research Paedophilia shows a strong, moral, and inquiring mind, not a foolish one.

A few years ago, Pete made a concert for the MARYVILLE ACADEMY at the HOUSE OF BLUES CHICACO. MARYVILLE ACADEMY is a leader in the treatment of physically, sexually, and emotionally abused children. Pete recorded the concert for a CD called "live House of blues Chicago" and give all the benefit to this charitie. I think it's one of the reason of the INNOCENCE OF PETE who participate in many charities alone and with the WHO. I'm sure he is innocent,so clear him. Thank God someone has the brains and integrity to put up a website dedicated to this! Pete Townshend is Rock's most intelligent and thoughtful writer and performer. One only has to take a cursory glance at his lyrics to glean that he has covered the subject of child abuse and neglect often! The rush to judgement that the press in the UK and the US has made only serves to feed on the hysteria. Does all of this mean that intent is a punishable offense? Does it also say that no one ever visits sites that they ought not to? I am not defending the sick and twisted world of child porn. However, why do we suppose that Pete did what he did for some evil, twisted purpose? These are real questions that need to be explored. I am a writer who happens to be a serious Who fan. E-mail me because I have not seen this addressed enough in the US press and I am Feeling motivated to create a piece on it. If I have enough feedback I will!

I'am very happy knowing there are people who back Pete, rather than dragging his name through the mud. He has the benefit of the doubt with me, and hope soon his name will be cleared. And when he is cleared, the sad part of it is his name will always be linked to child pornagraphy, which will never go away. With the recent information about the Internent Watch Foundation, first saying he didn't contact them, then saying he did, may very well help his case. Pete is innocent, that's what i've been saying all along.
I wrote a message earlier before i started looking at the site, and after having viewed it, i applaud all those involved in making this site. The facts that were written, all the people who supported him, and the list of charities he is involved with. Now this really doesn't sound like a man who will harm children. Shaun, you are correct that one shouldn't be judged from a single event in one's life. Pete has no history of supporting child pornography and in fact has done many, many good deeds. My original comment was to point out the incredibly bad judgment he used -- and that's even if you accept his explanation of researching the subject. I don't doubt that his explanation is the truth, but again his judgment was sorely lacking.

Nancy, I don't want to engage in a technical discussion of what constitutes 'downloading', we'll just agree to disagree on that. Your other contention is that giving one's credit card information to child pornographers -- upstanding citizens that they are -- in order to enter their Website may not result in a charge to said card. Uh huh, right. And the person giving their credit card information in the aforementioned circumstances can have the reasonable expectation that they won't be charged on the card. I'm having a hard time accepting this thesis.

And finally, I really feel disheartened by this revelation about Pete. I'm still a fan of his and The Who, and will remain so. We all make errors of judgment, but Pete's choice was one that he should have avoided. In our zeal to defend Pete from accusations that are perhaps not true, we still need to deal with what he in fact did -- and that's what I'm doing.

This is to clarify some points for Ken, whose comments are posted below.

Opening a web page is NOT the same as downloading. Downloading is saving an image as a file on your computer. If you do not download (save) an image from a website, you will not be able to see that image after you leave the web page you had opened.

Pete said he used a credit card to ENTER a website. Some websites use credit card numbers to establish that someone is over 18. If you do not know FOR A FACT that the website actually charged Pete's credit card any amount, don't assume that he "paid for porn".

I wanted to show my support for Pete, like many others stated, that he was there for me, throughout my my life, thru the toughest of teenage times to life in my late, ugh, the latest of my 30's. And I stand tall and proud, and support his innocence.
From first hand experience, I have learned that you can think you know someone, but what they are behind their own closed doors may be completely different. Pete has always been open and honest been about himself, good and bad. I've never seen him try to hide behind a goodie tooshoes facade. Quite the opposite, in fact. He definately posesses a dark, seedy, and I might add sick side to himself. ( read A Horse's Neck just for a taste of what lurkes in his mind)
I've always admired his openess to his fans and the public, being the first to admit to his human weaknesses and fallings, rather than putting up that celebrity hollier than thou, picture perfect status. And I believe him to my core. I'd like to ask though, why he was dragged through the mud, but t.v. shows like Maury Pauvich don't even receive a slap on the wrist for what I have seen them pull. They did a show on child pornography with the children, the parents that let them, and the agents/photographers as guests. The entire hour long show was constantly without a break, flashing closeup pictures of little girls dressed scantilly, posing in provocative positions, wearing make up, etc. It was so bad, that I had to turn the channel, because they kept showing photo after photo, non stop, almost like they were promoting it , rather than stating that it was a bad thing. One could've taped that show and had enough photos to never have to look on the internet!!! It was so overdone with the never ending photos that I cannot beleive that they got away with it, and without someone screaming about it, beside me.

This website is great. I support pete 100%. The picture in the papers of him being arrested made me shed a tear because...i can't explain it. It's just a feeling you get from his eyes. We played The Seeker as a show of support to Pete, and then Quiet Riot played a great version of My Generation in their set, introducing it as a song by their favorite band. Features lots of money for no or almost no investment by the sleazoid operator. He shoots sexually provocative in a very sly way pictures of little girls who are clothed. Have to remember that what would be sexually provocative of a child would NOT be the same as sexually provocative of an adult. So, these children, who think this is their big chance to pose for a "real" photographer, and be "real" models have no idea how these poses look to a pederast. One which bothered me most I think was one of a frail looking girl alone on an escalator in a shopping mall. Gee, look at this one and pretend to abduct her? Shit, they ALL bothered me. For ONLY $150- the guy will take an order from a customer of an outfit for whichever girl chosen, and shoot pictures of the kid in the clothing. Not sure if the kids get money for this or not, but am certain he takes the largest part off the top. Funny how he knows just how to pose the kids AND that the site which PeteTownsend was busted for visiting is located as well in... Texas! Gee, can it be a coincidence? Think that there might possibly be a competent investigation of this in this country (particulary THAT state right now) without fucking it up?? THAT would really astonish me. I don't believe they DO catch these people. I have never heard of it, only of "posession of photographs/ magazines" or missing kids. Have to say the UK seems to have a more realistic ideaology on the predators sprung loose. Something about perhaps implants of a tracking device or something. You know, I don't mean to vent, but I am very glad to see today's news in Britain. This piece - http://www.thisislondon.com/news/articles/3132507?source=EveningStandard - if it accurately represents what's going on over there, makes a great deal of sense of the past few weeks. I am finishing up law school in the states, and even my short involvement in that culture, I have seen that there is often a wide distance between what happens, what should happen, and what people think. I really do think PT's right to be criticized for even his benign stated reasons for what he was doing; but, if, as this article and he himself suggests, he reported what he saw to the prescribed authorities, then he seems to have willingly leaned toward the edge, but once there, did what was expected of him.

Of course, this is eclipsed by the headlines of a few weeks ago; perhaps even this positive article is also being too sensational in the other direction. Simply with his pattern of behavior and now, it seems, even disclosure to the proper channels, this just looks like he was trying a right thing in a very visibly wrong manner.

While Pete may have done a naive thing, I do not think he is a Pede and deserves our support. Do not close your eyes and run, the government could get you next for whatever reason. Do not say" this is not my problem" and leave Pete high and dry. Not all laws are moral and just and for the good. Although child porn laws may be good because there is a victim (children) many laws are victimless, and therefore need to be evaluated. An example may be marijuana laws, or buying booze before 12 noon, or bars closing at 2 A.M. and on and on. Call and write to the media let them know your displeasure with witchhunts and the treatment of Pete until proven in a court of law before his peers. Long Live Rock.

I can't speak for everyone here but I take the name of this site as meaning something different than you. I take it to mean, "Pete Townshend is innocent of being a pedophile." As you point out, I don't think there's much discussion over whether Pete broke the law. And as I have stated elsewhere, it may not matter to the police or to the law, (or you Ken) how much child porn Pete has on his site but it matters to me. A small amount supports his claims. A large amount does not.
As for the act of giving $29.95 to people who do purely evil things--consider this. If I give you $29.95 to help you run a business and then turn around and give twenty or thirty times that to an agency whose sole purpose it is to shut you down, am I a supporter of yours? Or just the opposite?
This is not to make light of your feelings. We are all struggling with exactly why Pete did what he did-- research for a book, research for his own psyche as to why he may have been abused, morbid curiosity...who the hell knows.
I personally just believe that this man, whose career I have followed so closely could not enjoy a sexual perversion that is so harmful (yes it is evil, and disgusting, but the most ANTI-PETE thing is that it is HARMFUL). It's just NOT what he has been about.
Doesn't mean I am right and/or that Pete is not a pedo but its a little like someone coming up and saying the world is not round. It's just too hard to believe and not because I enjoy his music. Hello, I'm a long-time -- about 31 year -- fan of Pete and The Who. What's inescapable about this entire episode -- or what we know about it at this point -- is in Pete's own admission:
"On one occasion I used a credit card to enter a site advertising child porn. I did this purely to see what was there."
Therefore, one can presume that he viewed images of child porn and therefore he did download it. Your Fact page may really mean to say that he didn't save any images to his computer hard drive, but we don't even know this for certain.
More importantly, again from Pete's admission -- he paid for child porn. When one pays money to pornographers, it's safe to assume that they'll use a portion of this money to support themselves and also some portion to produce more child porn. This is a very obvious and bad thing. I'm not able to get past this inescapable conclusion and therefore can't conclude as you have that Pete is innocent.

I'm hoping he will be cleared ... what happens after that, I don't know. Some people are eager to tear down gentlemen like Pete Townshend. The radio station in Detroit that has banned the Who's music is despicable. To turn their back on someone who absolutely deserves the benefit of the doubt is horrific. For those who have unfortunately suffered sexual abuse at the hands of authority figures and entrusted individuals, I can only hope that Pete is wholeheartedly telling the truth, and if he is, is fully exonerated of the charges against him. For more than 5 years, I have been a Program Educator/Advocate at an area domestic/sexual violence agency. I have followed Pete's entries on his website with great interest, and, in fact, have discussed them as they were posted with colleagues at my agency as well as with other advocates at a monthly statewide sexual violence task force I attend. While the chatboard was up at Pete's site, I wrote about sexual violence issues several times, largely in response to Pete's diary entries. I strongly feel that Pete deserves the benefit of the doubt, and I continue to look to Pete's words and music for inspiration, for energy, for enlightenment about some of the darkest sides of human nature, for anger at times, for all that is The Who.

Thanks for producing this site. Like millions of others I believe Pete to be innocent. Having read his diary entries over the past year or so and heard interviews etc in the past, I can understand some of his pain and what he went through and have always felt him to be one of the good guys. Someone who is genuinely caring and whom I would wish to have as a friend in need.
I am also genuinely afraid that the pressure could push him over the edge and pray that he can remain sober during this period and that he doesn't get to a point where he feels it's all too much for him. So many people have spoken up for him - even the media have been on his side for the main part rather than condemning him out of hand.
I had my own accidental but very chilling brush with porn a couple of years back. I have two young sons of my own and one day I was searching for Pokémon sites using MSN and Yahoo search engines. I clicked on the link to the second site which came up in the search and was immediately confronted with a pornographic video of someone giving a man a blow job. I checked in the website source and they'd put words like Pokemon, Barbie, Power Rangers etc in the metatabs!! These b***ards had deliberately targeting young children looking for stuff on their favourite TV programme. What's more - as I tried to close it more and more pages of filth popped up. It just goes to show how you can't avoid this stuff So anyone who tries to get rid of such filth is OK with me!

Hello RE: "Fact: Pete Townshend did NOT admit to downloading child pornography" I felt compelled to mention that when this broke out, he did in fact admit that he visited the sites using his credit card to view the images for research. Although he did not admit to saving them (which I believe he didn't do) he did download the images because otherwise he could not have viewed them in the first place. If you go to a news website like news.bbc.co.uk and do a search for something like "pete townshend admitted" you should get a viable article. This doesn't mean that I don't believe what he says. I believe his reasons and I hope he comes out with as little damage as possible. Sadly, he just went about it in a really stupid way and is now paying the price :(

Again, our clean world and the press need a victim. If it wasn't for Pete, it would've been someone else. Pete's exposed himself perhaps a little too much with all his charities for children and statements in "Different Bomb". He made the world focus him. If he is guilty, he is as "guilty" as any of us. My advice is: I think you have to be careful saying "Innocent until proven guilty" or things of that nature. It may be the case that Pete is found, or even pleads guilty to the crime charged. But this issue doesn't rest with that. Its whether his fans, family, and friends believe his reasons for entering the site.
We can't let it be that a "guilty" equals pedophile. In other words, he may be technically guilty, but not a person interested in this terrible material.
Just a thought.

I just wanted to say that this webpage is brilliant, and excellent job!
For being a Who-fan for 30 years, the news about Pete struck as lightning and the very thought of him doing such a thing made me sick to my stomach.
I truly believe (however stupid it was to do a thing like that) his explanation and hope that he will come out of this as unharmed as possible.
I recently called up the editor for a Swedish newspaper and gave him hell for the coverage of this matter, his London based reporter just seemed to cut, copy and paste outtakes from tabloids like The Sun, making Pete look real bad (haven 't read anything since..)!
I' ve been a lurker of the Odds & Sods mailing list for a couple of years (never posted anything though as i'm not much of a writer and the things I want to say is often already better said by someone else) and have met some from the list when The Who played in London 2000 (attended all three shows), and I am overwhelmed over the support and commitment he has (keep it up guys)!
This campaign should be called:

Clear him, don't smear him!

Thank you for this site. I think you should advertize a boycott of The Tonight Show, as Jay Leno is the only talk show host currently telling jokes about this. He is using Pete's fame for cheap laughs before he has even been charged.
